MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

Behind Christmas History lies the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The actual date as well as the year of the birth of the Lord Jesus is not known, as there is no mention of it in the Bible. This is evident from the fact that St Mark, an ancient gospel starts with the story of the baptism of Christ. The customs and the traditions inter linked with the Christmas festival predates the birth of Christ.
25th December is regarded to be the day when Christ was born. This particular date actually comes from Rome. The Romans observed the festival of Saturnalia, to worship Saturn [the God of sowing] and also to celebrate the rebirth of the Sun God. This festival was celebrated for a weeklong period, that is, from 17th December to 25th December. The Saturnalia festival was devoid of any Christian customs, so in order to introduce some Christian traits into the Festival, some Christian leaders declared the last day of the Roman festival to be the day when Jesus was born. From then onwards Christmas began to be celebrated on 25th December.

The story dealing with the birth of Jesus Christ is found only in the New Testament .The story goes that Jesus was born to Father Joseph and Mother Mary in a manger in Jerusalem. Jesus was thought to be the Son of God, who was sent with the task of guiding the people in the right path. The word Christmas means Christ's Mass in old English.

THIRUKAARTHIGAI DEEPAM 2010 ( തിരുകാര്‍തിഗ ദീപം )

Generally Indians all over the world celebrate another festival of light other than Deepavali, which is " Thirukaarthigai Deepam " or " Thiruvannaamalai Deepam ". The festival is celebrated on the first day of the full moon day on ' Karthigai ' month. It is also considered as the extension of Deepavali festival.
The proper way to celebrate this festival is by lighting up lamp on Deepavali day itself and doubling the number of lamps everyday. By this way, we are supposed to end up with a large number of lamps on the of " Thirukaarthigai Deepam ". There are two stories behind this sacred day :-

(1) One day Lord Shiva asked Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to find the exact location
of his head and his feet. Since Lord Shiva has taken a gigantic form, they are not able to find it anywhere. Then, Lord Shiva takes a form of ' jyothi ' ( light of fire ) on the hill of Thiruvannaamalai.

(2) Lord Muruga took the form of six little babies in a lake called " Saravana Poigai ". On this day all his six forms were united by Goddess Parvathi ( his mother ), by this way he has six faces. Special poojas are performed to Lord Muruga.

During this day, people usually clean the house. In the evening, kolam ( rangoli ) are drawn in front of the house and also place lamps on it. The lamps are also placed in the pooja room and lighted. Then the ' Deepaathaarana ' is done in which the lamps are moved to different places in the house. The lamps are arranged near the doors, windows, and also balconies. This is how this festival is celebrated.

Below are the pictures taken in my house during
" Thirukaarthigai Deepam ".
